The event, which is called Offroad Experience 2026, was organised by the German manufacturer in Stockstadt am Rhein, Germany. It is designed to showcase the capabilities of its range of construction vehicles in action.
The range includes conventional diesel-powered trucks in the Arocs series, such as the 1853 LS 4×2, 2240 AK 4×4, 3246 K 8×4/4 and 3348 AK 6×6, as well as electric (BEV) versions such as the eArocs 400 in an 8×4/4 configuration with a concrete mixer or tipper body. There are also Actros vehicles for construction site support, such as the 2548 L 6×2, and highly manoeuvrable Unimogs, including the U5023 with specialist firefighters’ equipment. Mercedes-Benz’s range of products for off-road operations also includes medium-segment Atego models, such as the 1530 K 4×2, as well as multi-axle tractors for exceptional loads from the Actros and Arocs SLT series.
The test took place at the lorry, earth-moving machinery and demolition and material recycling equipment test track at the Coreum specialist facility. Covering an area of 120,000 square metres, this testing ground features various types of tracks designed to evaluate the technological solutions developed for quarries and construction sites. These include the turbo-retarder clutch for heavy-haul convoys.
Thanks to a hydrodynamic coupling and a hydraulic retarder, it enables friction-free starts without wear on the clutch disc whilst providing the driver with high braking power during deceleration. The test in Germany also provided an opportunity to experience the switchable auxiliary drive system (HAD) first-hand. This system utilises hydraulic motors at the wheel hubs. The HAD replaces the permanent drive solution on both axles when additional torque is required for short periods at low speeds to negotiate sections with low grip.
The battery-powered eArocs 400 in an 8×4 configuration was one of the highlights of the German off-road event. This BEV is fitted with lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries with an installed capacity of 414 kWh. In the concrete mixer version, the operating range reaches 200 kilometres.
